Trupanion - Reposting - No Insurance Co Reps, Employees or Vet Replies Please - Consumers Only
Hello, We've had Trupanion a few years and it's an excellent product; we don't appreciate the way their representatives do business at times.
Is there another business doing coverage that pays vets directly, when going to a participating vet, for accidents? Trupanion doesn't cover wellness and that's fine.
There are some in the UK, hopefully the states catches upR
Trupanion - Trupanion increase yet again: at what point should I just self-insure?
Full background:
I have had both my dogs insured by Trupanion for several years now, both since they were pups. One will be 7 this November, and the other just turned 4.
My premiums have gone from $126/mo in 2022 to what will now be $290/mo starting in June. So more than 2x increase in 2 years.
Over the years I've had a few emergency vet visits (mostly from ingesting foreign substances) and filed claims. In total they've paid out about $4100.
But now I'm just not sure it's worth it anymore. Changing insurance is probably out of the question for me given the number of past incidents that would probably be considered "pre-existing conditions" now. But paying $3480 a year (and probably will just increase more) feels completely ridiculous.
Should I just cancel the policy and put the money toward a savings account instead? Or is the risk not worth it?
My brain tells me cancel, but it feels like a decision I can't really walk back once I do it.
Trupanion - Trupanion is a waste of money according to my vet!
I had signed up for trupanion pet insurance after reading good reviews. Now my dog had a CCL rupture and needs surgery. They refused to cover ANY costs because they classified limping as a pre-existing illness. After my vet send them a lengthy letter (as seen in picture) they STILL denied coverage saying they do not cover any CCL injuries that occur within 18 MONTHS!!!!!!
Absolute waste of time and money. My vet hates them too. Have cancelled my subscription.
Trupanion - Tartar - Pre-Existing Condition
Hi everyone. I brought my 5 and 9 month old kittens for a wellness exam this morning to show there are no pre-existing conditions to Trupanion. The vet ended up noting that there was a very small amount of tartar on just one tooth of each cat, and it was so mild she didn’t even know if it was just food residue or tartar. It also took her multiple tries to even see it. She did however note that the dental score for my cats are both 0, meaning there is no sign of disease or tartar (?).
Trupanion is now saying that for the rest of my cats lives, any dental issues (other than accidental breaks) won’t be covered since it is a pre-existing condition. I’m at a loss for what to do… I know cats often need extractions and I chose Trupanion for their dental coverage. It is so frustrating that because of that one finding that was so mild, nothing will be covered.
Does anyone have any experience with this and any advice? I’ve read somewhere that someone had their vet write a note saying it was not a pre-existing condition. Has anyone else heard of this?
Trupanion - Wellness Plan Recommendations for Sphynx Cats?
I have a pair of Sphynx cats—both female, spayed, and 1.5 years old.
Right now, I have Trupanion for their pet insurance, and overall, I’ve had a good experience with them. That said, one of my girls had an allergic reaction earlier this year that required multiple follow-up visits, and the out-of-pocket costs for exams alone really added up. I reached out to Trupanion, and they said I’m allowed to have a separate wellness plan from another provider to help cover things like exam fees and routine care.
So now I’m on the hunt for a solid wellness plan—mainly one that covers exams, vaccines, and most importantly, the annual HCM screening for both girls. Trupanion might or might not cover that since it’s kind of a gray area between diagnostic and preventive. I’m betting they’ll treat it as preventive, so I want a backup plan.
Any recommendations for wellness plans or other insurance options? Every time I think I’ve found a good one, I come across a flood of awful reviews (though I know that’s just the nature of insurance). I do plan to call and confirm coverage details before signing up, and I’ll also ask if they can review my girls’ vet records to determine what they’d consider pre-existing.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!
Trupanion - Trupanion Cat Dental
Hi! Thought id share my experience with my cat! He is 4yr - i have had Trupanion since i adopted him a year+ ago. He had no pre-existing conditions. I specifically asked agent of dental was covered and they said yes.
He has been to the vet a couple times - first time visit, ear infection, worms from new kitten we got, etc. The vet has briefly checked his teeth previously and said a little tartar but overall healthy gums.
Friend got a new cat so was asking about my policy - reading the “fine print” is that dental doesn’t kick in until first post-insurance dental/oral examination. I immediately emailed and asked that his dental coverage has kicked in - they said no because they have no notes from vet. I said she probably didn’t note because there was nothing of note…asked if i got her to confirm they could put into effect retroactively.
They said yes.
Vet sent over full records to them - vet “briefly” checked mouth with said assessment on 12/11/24. They said it will take a couple days to process but will get back to me. Still waiting and can update but wanted to just flag!!!
I also checked because he may have some mouth issues that i flagged to vet a couple weeks ago (still undetermined) but glad i did because i could see their potential denial saying “he didn’t have an oral exam prior blah blah blah.”
Anyway TLDR - check the fine print!! They are so sneaky and if they fight me on this i will probably cancel.
Trupanion - Paying deductible if vet bill is less than
Hi everyone, my deductible for trupanion is $750. I’m paying $65/monthly, which I think is insanely high. I have a miniature dachshund who’s 1.5 years old.
His ear has been looking red and we have an upcoming check up at the vet next week. If an infection, they’ll likely prescribed ear drops or antibiotics, which I’m assuming will be a hell of a lot less than $750.
I am looking for some guidance on this or others experiences, when the vet bill is way less than the deductible. I understand it’s per condition so in the future if he has ear issues, it would be covered (which is likely considering his cute floppy ears). I am unsure what to do, as I don’t want to be denied claims in the future if more ear troubles arise and I don’t submit one now.
Hope this makes sense. Thank you!
Trupanion - Trupanion Pre-existing COLDS??
I have not enrolled in Trupanion but I am interested in them because of their direct pay options.. however I was chatting with an agent and I asked about prior history of colds or ear infections and she said that would be a pre-existing condition.
She said it also depends on the record review. I asked for a contact to review my records and she said that can only be done after enrolling. I asked for a compliance department contact, and she said that isn't available for members.
Can someone give me any insight to any of these statements? I'm getting different responses when I speak with different agents.
Trupanion - Trupanion's deductible/copay
Hello,
Can someone with experience using Trupanion confirm how their reimbursement actually works?
Here’s the situation:
Let’s say my total invoice is $1,200 (excluding tax and for a single condition). My deductible is $1,000, which has already been met. That leaves $200 of eligible costs. Based on my understanding, I would then pay 10% of the remaining $200 ($20), and Trupanion would cover the other 90% ($180).
However, when I submitted a recent claim, Trupanion told me that the 10% co-pay is calculated based on the total invoice **before** the deductible is applied. So according to them, I’m responsible for 10% of $1,200 ($120), **plus** the $1,000 deductible, and they only covered $80.
But their own website says this:
"Co-payments, also known as coinsurance, represent the proportion of eligible veterinary expenses that the pet parent is responsible for after the deductible has been met. For example, if a pet insurance plan offers a 90% reimbursement rate, **the policyholder would be responsible for paying the remaining 10% of the eligible expenses after the deductible has been satisfied**."
This seems contradictory. Has anyone else experienced this? Am I misunderstanding something?
Trupanion - Trupanion claim denied - should I appeal?
So about a month ago, I took my dog in for her routine dental cleaning. While she was under anesthetic, the vet discovered that she had gotten a stick that was wedged right across the roof of your mouth and had punctured her gums on both sides, requiring 2 of her premolars to be extracted.
I filed a claim but it was denied because years ago (all the way back in 2019) there was a record of some peridontal disease at a completely different vet. Trupanion is saying they won't cover this latest incident because of that prior history, even though I've been with Trupanion since I got my pupper.
Is it even worth the effort to try appealing this? I just feel like the damage to her teeth was not really caused by periodontal disease, it was more of a freak accident because she chewed a stick.
